The Snipe is a 15-1/2 foot, 2 person, one design racing dinghy with a rich history. Designed by William Crosby in 1931, it has evolved into a modern, tactical racing dinghy with fleets around the world. Although the Snipe Class has some of the best competition in the world, the class has not lost sight of the importance of social events and, in fact, many regattas are as well known for their parties as they are for their racing. The essence of the class is summed up by its motto: Serious Sailing, Serious Fun.®

The Snipe fleet has attended several regattas recently and carried the FYC burgee across the nation.

Andy Culver, along with his son Andrew, won the Low Country regatta in Beaufort, SC. They bested a fleet of sailors from Atlanta and Charleston. They were also able to partake in the scenic Club grounds and famous low country boil.

Hal Gilreath and Andy Culver both traveled to Pensacola for the Snipe District Four Championships. Hal and Andy finishing first and second. The sailing was marked by a great day of sea breeze and warm temperatures. They’ll return next year to Pensacola for our National Championships.

August brought on the Snipe Nationals in windy San Francisco Bay. True to its reputation, the Bay provided six days of awesome sailing in 18-25 knots of breeze. The fleet sailed out of Richmond Yacht Club, which proved to be a great sailing and social venue. Hal Gilreath represented FYC, finishing ninth in the highly competitive field.

Upcoming regattas include the North Americans in Boston, Snipe US Team World Qualifier at FYC and the Halloween Regatta in Atlanta. There’s a regatta for everyone who wants to have Serious Sailing and Serious Fun.
