Our first week in the FYC sailing camp was a great one and the children were exposed to many experiences. Over 35 sailors had great wind and weather! Some of the week’s highlights were the toddler (3-6) racing. Six races on Pirates Cove show the skills of our young sailors. FYC is the only Club in America offering a toddler camp!

FYC Sailing Team is hard at work sailing in the mornings and afternoons. Seeing our team sailors fl ying spinnakers in our 420’s is an impressive sight. The team has started sailing EC-12 remote control sailboats. The EC-12 is a great shoreside perspective for learning tactics, strategies, and the rules of sailing. We have a match racing (Boat on Boat) format this year.

We are offering all day camps for Team Sailors & Toddlers from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, Tuesday to Friday. There are many different camp formats to choose from.

Morning Schedule 9:00 am – 12:00 pm

  • Toddler Sailing (Limit: 6 sailors per week)
  • Morning Fun Sail
  • FYC Sailing Team
  • Small Powerboat Course (Limit: 5 boaters per session)

Afternoon Schedule 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm

  • Tennis/Sail - See tennis shop for more information

We will be offering Junior Racing with the Jacksonville Youth Yacht Racing Association on June 12th & 19th; July 17th, 24th & 31st; and August 7th.

Snipe’s Sailing News

Another great season of Snipe sailing is in front of us. Our own regatta, the Tea Party, is coming up March 8th-9th. We expect a good turnout as many crews will use this as a tune up for the Midwinters. If there is suffi cient interest, we will host a racing clinic on Friday afternoon, please call me about a clinic. Also, PLEASE let me know if you want to HELP with registration, RC, trophies, housing or anything else. The Winter Circuit is March 30th-April 12th, and is sailed in Clearwater, Miami, and Nassau.

I spoke with John Fewell recently and he is interested in sailing with us in the Snipe. We hope to see John and his boys out soon. Class membership fee is still $20 ($15 Juniors) or $50 ($45 Juniors) if you own a boat. Please call me if you need a membership application.

Thank you,

Hal Gilreath
Snipe Fleet Captain

FYC Spring Inshore Fishing Tournament

The weather forecast for our March 10th Tournament called for a 60% chance of rain. What we got was clear blue skies and light winds. This made for a fantastic day on the water. We had a great turnout and a fun weigh-in! The fish were not feeding, but our anglers were determined and brought in some nice catches. Saturday was an excellent example of how many great anglers we have at FYC. The highlight of the weigh-in for me was the Hawkins Family bringing in a tiny Flounder. It was so small we had to joke and make fun of this pitiful fish. David let us make fun of him for several minutes until his son emerged with a beautiful 2.5 lb., doormat sized flounder. It turned out to be nicest fish of the Tournament. Here are your results for the 2007 FYC Spring Inshore Tournament:

Top Angler Chris Cioffi 4 Speckled Trout to 1¾ lbs.
Flounder David Hawkins 2 ½ lbs.
Redfish Jerry Cioffi 2 lbs.
Trout Tom McKeithen, Jr. 2 lbs.
Cioffi Family Jerry Cioffy
Tom McKeithen David Hawkins
Captain Tony

Our top Junior Angler was Will Montgomery. Will brought in a nice 4 lb. Catfish, a handful of yellowmouth trout and a croaker. Congrats to all our winners and thanks to everyone for participating.

Attention Boaters!!!

The U.S. Marine and Wildlife Division (Federal Government) has placed manatee markers along the shoreline of the St. Johns River. These markers have been placed 300 feet from land, and require "Slow" or "No Wake" speed within the designated area. Please be aware of these markers and use good judgment when approaching. These markers officially end at the Ortega River Bridge. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at 923-3757.
